REMINDER: Dave Reichert Voted Against Legislation Protecting Women from Being Fired for Using Birth Control or Receiving an Abortion

Now, Reichert wants to “unravel” affordable reproductive health care services in Washington State.

Seattle, WA — In Congress, Dave Reichert joined MAGA Republicans and voted repeatedly to ban and restrict access to reproductive health care, stripping women of their right to privacy and bodily autonomy. Reichert was even willing to vote against several pieces of legislation that protected women from being fired at work for getting an abortion or using birth control.

Since his time in Congress, Reichert hasn’t changed one bit. In April, he chose to have his first town hall at Firmly Planted Action, an anti-abortion extremist group that wants to “END ABORTION once and for all.” There, Reichert told his supporters how they could “unravel” affordable abortion services and even said, “It’s going to take, hopefully, [two] years of being in the governor’s office.”

“Dave Reichert has consistently shown he believes he should be the one making these deeply personal health care decisions, and is willing to punish women who make their own choices,” said Shasti Conrad, chair of the WA State Democrats. “Reichert cannot be trusted to protect our reproductive rights and freedoms in Washington State.”

In addition to voting to punish women for using birth control or getting an abortion, Reichert also:

  • Voted for three nationwide abortion bans (October 2017, May 2015, and June 2013) that would have imposed criminal penalties, including a maximum five-year prison sentence on physicians who violated the ban.
  • Voted twice in 2015 and 2017 against amendments that would have added an exception to abortion restrictions in order to protect the health of a mother.
  • Voted repeatedly to restrict access to contraception, including as recently as 2018.
  • Voted nearly twenty times to block federal funding for Planned Parenthood and affordable abortion services.
  • Voted to allow health care providers to deny abortions in 2016.
  • Voted to make it a crime to help abortion-seeking minors travel across state lines to avoid parental notification laws.
