No matter how hard she tries, Smiley can’t hide her extreme anti-abortion views from Washington voters

(Seattle, WA) –MAGA Republican Tiffany Smiley is increasingly getting noticed for her extreme anti-abortion views that are out of line with the overwhelming majority of Washingtonians. 

She can’t hide from the facts: this is the same Tiffany Smiley who calls herself “100 percent pro-life,” endorsed the extreme Texas abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest, cheered the decision overturning Roe v. Wade, and is raising money from, campaigning with, and collecting endorsements from anti-abortion politicians who are committed to passing a national abortion ban.

Vanity Fair: Seems Like GOP Candidates Really Don’t Like Getting Called Out For Their Anti-Abortion Views: “Tiffany Smiley, the GOP nominee in Washington’s U.S. Senate race, also attempted to clarify her abortion stance last week… In Smiley’s ad, the Republican candidate insisted that she is not the antiabortion “extremist” Murray has portrayed her as. However, leading up to the race’s primary election, Smiley said she agreed with Texas’s near-total abortion ban, which is widely considered to be among the most extreme in the country.” 

CNN: A Senate candidate’s new ad is latest example of Republicans attempting to deflect abortion attacks: “The Republican nominee for US Senate in Washington both touted her “pro-life” anti-abortion view and asserted her opposition to a federal abortion ban in a new ad on Thursday, as Republican congressional candidates in tough races across the country attempt to defuse an issue that could cost them… Months before Washington’s August 2 primary, Smiley signaled her support for Texas’ near-total ban on abortion, and said it’d be ‘awesome’ to have former President Donald Trump’s support.”

The Washington Post: Opinion: The great Republican abortion backtrack has begun: “Other candidates haven’t actually changed their positions or scrubbed their websites, but they are taking pains to strike a more modest pose than they had during the primaries. Tiffany Smiley, the GOP Senate candidate in Washington, said on a podcast that she was “100 percent pro-life,” a clip incumbent Sen. Patty Murray plays in her ads. But now Smiley says, “I’m pro-life, but I oppose a federal abortion ban.” 

Daily Kos: Republicans are getting what they asked for on abortion, and regretting it: “And blue-state Republicans—who won their primaries on their forced birther positions—are furiously backtracking. Like Tiffany Smiley, who is running against Sen. Patty Murray in Washington. She said on a podcast (as captured in this Murray ad) that she’s “100% pro-life.” Smiley has her own ads out now, in which she insists that “I’m pro-life, but I oppose a federal abortion ban.” Right. In another she says “As an OB-GYN triage nurse, I have seen the heartbreak and the tears.” Get that? She’s empathetic. “It is past time that we stop treating pregnancy like a disease that prevents women from getting a job or a raise,” she says. Okay. She’s going to reform business and society so pregnant people are discriminated against in the workplace? Sure.”

CBS News: Democrats spending heavily on abortion leading up to midterm elections: “In one of the more recent abortion-related ads released by a Republican, Washington Senate candidate Tiffany Smiley makes a direct appeal to camera after Democratic Senator Patty Murray released an ad slamming her over abortion… When Roe v. Wade was overturned, Smiley said it means people’s representatives will make the decisions on regulating abortion but she did not say what regulations she would like to see. She has, however, previously said she agrees with Texas’ near-total abortion ban.”

Daily Kos: Blake Masters suddenly stops touting his strident Anti-Abortion stance & scrubs his website: “I’ve also seen the Republican Senate nominee in my state of Washington, Tiffany Smiley’s new ad tries to back away from a rigidly absolutist stance, and now saying she opposes a nationwide strict abortion ban… But I doubt a tactical retreat means Blake Masters or Tiffany Smiley’s views on abortion have altered at all. They just cynically want those views to fly under the radar until they can get elected.”
