New from The Advocate: “Washington’s Republican gubernatorial candidate Dave Reichert has history of voting against LGBTQ+ rights”

The Advocate, the nation’s oldest and largest LGBTQIA+ publication, calls attention to Reichert’s threat to LGBTQIA+ Washingtonians

Seattle, WA — Today, The Advocate published a scathing piece detailing Dave Reichert’s bigoted attacks on LGBTQIA+ rights. According to the article, while Reichert tries to “[position] himself as a moderate choice…his long record of voting against LGBTQ+ rights and his recent homophobic and transphobic statements reveal the threat he poses to the state’s LGBTQ+ community.”

The piece goes on to detail Reichert’s homophobic comments from a campaign event this year when he told his supporters behind closed doors that “marriage is between a man and a woman,” as well as his votes in Congress to disenfranchise LGBTQIA+ families and children. Noting that 72% of Washington’s residents “support marriage equality and believe in protecting the rights of the trans community,” the article slams Reichert’s remarks and votes as “out of step with the majority of Washingtonians.”

“Dave Reichert’s hateful attacks on Washington’s LGBTQIA+ communities reveal just how wrong he is for our state,” said Shasti Conrad, chair of the WA State Democrats. “Words and actions matter, and Reichert’s have stripped LGBTQIA+ individuals of their humanity and dignity. We cannot trust him to do what’s right.”

Reichert’s votes in Congress against LGBTQIA+ communities include:

  • Voting against protecting LGBTQIA+ children from discrimination at school.
  • Voting to give religious institutions an exemption from protecting LGBTQIA+ workers against discrimination.
  • Voting against a motion that would bar federal contractors from LGBTQIA+ discrimination
  • Voting against preventing discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
