100 Days In, Washingtonians Have Been Left Behind by Trump and Republicans
Seattle, WA – As Washingtonians endure 100 days of Donald Trump’s chaos and “pain,” while staring down the barrel of a “Trump recession,” WA Democrats Chair Shasti Conrad released the following statement:
“Donald Trump promised he’d lower prices in Washington. Instead, in the first 100 days of the Trump administration, seniors have helplessly watched their 401(k)s shrink, while local stores and groceries warn they won’t be able to stock their shelves, and the nation teeters on the edge of a Trump-made recession that will uniquely hurt Washington, the most trade-dependent state. Instead of stopping the madness, Trump and congressional Republicans are setting their sights on a budget bill that could eliminate life-saving health care programs, force families to pay thousands more for child care, and raise energy costs – all to pay for tax handouts for billionaires. As a result, Donald Trump is now flailing and hitting the lowest approval rating of any president at this stage in 80 years. It’s only been 100 days and Washingtonians have had more than enough of Trump’s broken promises and chaos.”
In just 100 days, Washingtonians and Americans across the country are already hurting from Trump’s failed, recession-inducing economic agenda:
- Washington has witnessed 79,148 unemployment filings under Donald Trump.
- More companies filed for bankruptcy in the first three months of this year than in any first quarter since 2010.
- As grocery prices increased by the most in over two years, 76% of Americans warned their incomes were not keeping up with inflation. Now, grocery stores say they won’t be able to stock store shelves.
- 73% of Americans say they are “financially stressed” in Trump’s collapsing economy, and most say the economy and grocery costs are worse than a year ago.
Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress are pushing a budget bill that would take the current reality working families face from bad to worse – all to give billionaires trillions of dollars worth of tax cuts.
- Through their disastrous budget, Trump and congressional Republicans are planning to:
- Rip away 1.8 Million Washingtonians access to affordable health care.
- Slash Americans’ hard-earned Social Security benefits by defunding the independent Social Security Board. Some 1.45 Million Washingtonians receive Social Security benefits.
- Eliminate Head Start — costing working families an extra $12,000 a year for child care and ripping away kids’ health care. 12,488 kids living in Washington rely on Head Start funding.
- Gut affordable housing and make energy more expensive for millions of working families.
- All to give tax breaks to billionaires and mega-corporations.
As a result of his dangerous agenda, Donald Trump is facing the lowest 100-day mark approval ratings of any president in the last 80 years.
- In 100 days, Trump has done nothing to make life better for working families, and they have buyer’s remorse.
- Trump’s job performance has tanked to 39% — lower than previous presidents at this point in their term.
- 3 in 4 Americans believe the economy is faltering, and the majority believe Trump is to blame.
- On top of that, 53% of Americans say their financial situation is getting worse, marking the first time since 2001 that a majority has expressed financial pessimism.
- So it is no wonder that Americans overwhelmingly disapprove of Trump’s handling of the economy, and most Americans have lost confidence in Trump’s ability to make sound economic policy decisions.
- Trump is to blame for the fact that life is more expensive, it’s harder to retire, and a “Trump recession” is at our doorstep, which explains why he already has the lowest approval rating of any president at this stage, going back generations.
