Trump Tariffs Tax Everyone and (Almost) Everything

Seattle, WA – Today, President Trump announced sweeping tariffs that will jack up prices on most consumer goods and amount to a national sales tax for every American, potentially costing households more than $3,000 a year. By placing high import duties on nearly all goods from nearly all trading partners, American companies and consumers will bear the brunt of this tariff policy, especially as other nations respond with reciprocal tariffs. 

“With consumer confidence plummeting, economic growth contracting, and inflation continuing to rise, now is the exact worst time to implement new tariffs that will skyrocket prices and hurt Washington families’ bottom line,” said Chair Shasti Conrad. “Trump is leading our country off an economic cliff. The last time we saw tariff policy like this was the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 that supercharged the Great Depression. As one of the most trade-connected states in the country, thanks to our agricultural products and high-tech industries, Washingtonians will bear even more extreme impacts than the rest of the country. Our Washington can’t afford the boneheaded economic policies coming out of the other Washington.”
